During an eye exam, the doctor will perform a series of tests to assess your eyes:

  • Visual Acuity Test: Measures how well a person sees at different distances and is usually performed using an eye chart.

  • Refraction Test: Measures the way light enters the eye and is used to determine the need for glasses or contact lenses.

  • Slit-Lamp Exam: A special microscope called a slit lamp to examine the structures of the eye, including the cornea, iris, lens, and retina.

  • Glaucoma Screening Test (Tonometry): This test measures the pressure inside the eye and can be an early sign of glaucoma.

  • Dry eye screening

A routine eye exam is a crucial part of preventive eye care and is typically recommended once a year for most people. Regular eye exams can help detect and treat vision problems and eye diseases early before they become more serious and potentially more difficult and expensive to treat. Additionally, routine eye exams can help ensure that individuals have the best possible vision and eye health and can make necessary adjustments to their vision correction if needed.
